Achieving the Right Density from Hair Transplant Surgery By Robert True on June 30, 2013

Hair Density from Transplant / Restoration SurgeryMany men suffer from male pattern baldness. Sometimes men are okay with it, but other times they wish that they could have a full head of hair again that makes them look young and energetic. That's where the experts at our hair loss clinics come into play. Using the latest surgical techniques available, we can help people achieve full heads of natural, growing hair.

One of the most important concerns that prospective patients have involves the results of hair transplant surgery. In particular, many wonder about the nature of hair density. Our team would like to take a few moments right now to go over the basics of hair density and hair transplant surgery so you have a good understanding of what is involved.

Why Hair Density is So Important

Hair density refers to the distribution of hair on the end. In essence, achieving good hair density means natural results (i.e., no one will know you underwent hair restoration surgery).

Hair Transplantation Density Problems in the Past

In the past, hair restoration surgeons often used hair plugs in order to restore hair. While the results could be good, there was often an issue with hair density and distribution.

There were many telltale signs that a person had gotten hair plugs. When results were poor, for instance, the hair plugs were very noticeable. The plugs were uniformly spaced out and left a lot of room around them. This space was further pronounced by the density of the plugs focused on a single small area between 2mm to 4mm wide. In some cases, the hair on the head was distributed like the hair on a child's doll.

How Modern Hair Transplant Surgery Works

Modern hair transplant surgery techniques such as follicular unit transplantation (FUT) and follicular unit extraction (FUE) are performed in order to achieve more natural hair distribution and density.

Whereas hair plugs involved hair grafts that were between 2mm and 4mm wide, both FUT and FUE use the actual follicular units themselves. The follicular units are little groupings of hair on the head, which usually contain just 1 to 4 hairs. These follicular units are harvested from a donor area and then carefully placed into the patient's scalp.

Are the results natural looking?

Yes. Since FUT and FUE use follicular units, there are no telltale parts of the scalp where the grafts can be easily identified. No need to worry about doll's hair or the resemblance to a doll's head. In addition, the density and distribution is seamless with any remaining hair, which makes for the most natural hair restoration results possible.

What other hair restoration options are there?

Some prospective patients feel that surgery is not for them but they would still like to restore their hair. In such cases, we will be more than happy to discuss alternatives. There are numerous treatments for balding and hair loss, and we feel that by discussing them in greater detail, patients will be able to make decisions with which they can be very pleased.
